Sette Dolori Winery
We have been making wine for over 20 years, mostly as a hobby. In 2011 we realized we were making over 100 gallons a season and people weren’t turning it down. So we researched how hard it would be to make wine commercially.
18 months later, we became fully licensed, and in the Fall of 2013 began our first commercial batch of wine.
When we went commercial we wanted to make our wine as organically as possible, after all we have always eaten that way why not drink that way as well!
We hope you enjoy our wines as much as we enjoy making it, and no worries about the alcohol, this kind is actually good for you!!

One of Colorado’s oldest wineries, Stoney Mesa Winery was established in 1989 by the Neal family with the purchase of a 50 acre farm in Cedaredge, Colorado. Having roots in Western Colorado, they had began to notice a burgeoning wine industry in the fruit growing areas of Colorado. Having a love of wine and the area, in 1990 the first vines were planted and the roots of Stoney Mesa Winery took hold. Over the years we have expanded to multiple farms and also source grapes from many local growers.

Our current larger scale production focus is on white wines. Although we think Colorado can produce some great reds, we are focusing on our belief that white grapes will be our foundation. That is especially true in Delta County, where our largest farm is located. But we do understand that reds are a key to a successful winery. This will allow us to re-establish our red wine production as a much higher quality product and grow it from there. But the nature of red wine is a slow process and takes time. We have begun by fitting the barrel room with an impressive humidification system which is crucial in our arid climate and installed better cooling to maintain a more even temperature in the barrels room. These are both key to maintaining a more stable environment to age high quality reds in.

Ten Bears Winery officially opened in 2007, with the vineyard planting to follow in 2009. It is named after the road that borders the east side of the estate. (Ten Bears Winery sounded better than County Road 23E Winery.)
Our winemaker, William Conkling, with a background in Biology, Chemistry, and Geology, began his fermentation career in 1999 working in Quality Assurance for one of the local breweries in Fort Collins, but he always maintained a passion for winemaking. After 7 years at the brewery he decided it was time to take his hobby to the next, and legal, level. After finishing the winery construction in 2006, the next step was licensing and approvals, and in just under a year we were ready for the first grape harvest. Using grapes from Colorado’s Western Slope we made our first Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, and with Washington grapes we made our first Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.

After a couple of years of research, into what types of grapes to plant on the Front Range, we had finally found what we believed would be the best varietals to plant in our unique climate, the Marquette and La Crescent. Both are cold hardy hybrids developed by the University of Minnesota with the Marquette producing a wonderful red wine and the La Crescent an amazing white. With lots of help from family and friends we managed to plant 480 vines in May of 2009, with minimal soil disruption, to maintain the native flora. Hopes of a small harvest were quickly dashed in the Spring of 2012 due to an unnaturally warm April followed by a freeze in May which caused us to lose the first bud break, but the outlook is good for future harvests, so we will keep our fingers crossed, and keep a look out for Ten Bears Winery Larimer County Estate Bottled Marquette and La Crescent in the near future.
