Mountain Spirit Winery opened in 1995 and is a family-owned and operated boutique winery nestled in the high country of the Upper Arkansas River Valley. We produce premium wines on five acres of farmland with apple orchards and an old homestead, surrounded by 14,000-foot mountain vistas. The grapes are trucked in after being freshly picked from the Western Slope vineyards of Colorado.

Co-vintners Terry and Michael Barkett bring state of the art equipment and educational backgrounds of clinical medicine and computer science to Mountain Spirit’s winemaking. This winery is trying to answer the question: “Everyone has a Merlot and Chardonnay. Do you have anything different to offer?” We continue to explore new blends of wines while maintaining high standards inherent to the gentle art of winemaking, which gives rise to our motto:

“Quality wines with a difference.”

Due to the overwhelming popularity of Mountain Spirit Wines they are only available to the public through the website, directly from the winery or gallery, or the Twisted Cork Cafe in Salida.

A Unique Family, Making Unique Wine

We’re a family of strong opinions, but somehow we get along. There are only a handful of things we all see eye to eye on, and the most important one is a belief that good food and good drink can make a good day great and a bad day good. We’ve spent a lot of time perfecting recipes, and along with that comes a lot of experimentation. We may try and fail here and there, but we learn a lot along the way. None of us is classically trained in wine making, and that’s nothing we’re ashamed of.  As a matter of fact, we embrace it; it’s a point of pride; it’s an opportunity to be ourselves even in our wines, to take risks we see as practical that others see as crazy. There’s a lot to learn from the various traditions and schools of wine making, and we see ourselves as students of them all. We do not see our style as superior, merely enjoy our freedom to move freely between tradition and invention. We see none of the risks we take with wine as a novelty. We are out to make quality wine that is unique. We may never make the world’s most classically perfect Merlot, but that’s just fine with us.

Two Swedes Glögg

Brought together by an insatiable appetite for music, ice hockey and fine alcohol of all kinds, the two Swedes, Ulrik (Rik) and Per-Magnus (PM) met in Colorado in 1996. They were both born and raised in Sweden in the 1960s and emigrated separately to the US of A in the 1990s. Enjoying what the US had to offer, the two Swedes eventually felt that something was missing, something that couldn’t be had at IKEA (or at least not of decent quality) : Glögg, the winter warmer, the reason for Christmas being so much fun growing up!

Glögg was soon to had at any time during the winter and Ric and PM finally decided to bring the tradition stateside.Two Swedes and their families hope you will enjoy the tradition of glögg, and glögg related activities, as much as they do! Skål!
